Southern California Dog Attacks More Prevalent Than Commonly Thought
A rash of recent dog attacks in Los Angeles show that dog bites are more common than thought.

While the vast majority of dogs provide companionship and loyalty for many of their owners, when dogs get off leash, frightened or have been abused, it can result in an innocent bystander being bitten. For example, last April three people were attacked by a pair of dogs in the Wilmington district of Los Angeles in two separate attacks on the same day from the same dogs. Two men and one woman all sustained injuries that required medical attention.

The same man owned both dogs responsible for the bites. Chuco, a boxer/American bulldog mix, and Cisco, a pit bull/Akita mix, were somehow released from their fenced yard the day the attacks occurred. Because of these attacks, the dogs may have to be euthanized.

Alfredo Ramos, one of the three victims, was walking with his elderly mother-in-law and young son when they spotted the dogs. His son was able to run home, but the dogs attacked Ramos, biting him for three to four minutes on the arms and legs. Ramos was grateful that his young son was able to escape before the attack occurred.

According to the dogs' owner, Rick Hernadez, the animals had shown no signs of aggression prior to these incidents. However, he took full responsibility for the event and stated he was praying for the recovery of the injured individuals.

Dog bites are actually very common. In 2010 there were 34 fatal dog attacks in the United States. Each day, approximately 1,000 Americans go to the emergency room to be treated for dog bites. California is among the top 5 states for fatal dog attacks, which makes this a very serious concern for area families.
