Ohio's "Fathers' Rights" Movement Gains Dads Equality in Family Courts
The Fathers' Rights movement has impacted fathers' equality in Ohio family courts and custody decisions.

November 19, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ohio's "Fathers' Rights" Movement Gains Dads Equality in Family Courts

Equal rights for fathers in court proceedings for child custody, visitation and child support has been building. The evolving "Fathers' Rights" movement has been compared to the Civil Rights struggles, Marriage Equality and Feminist movements. While many fathers still feel courts look first to the mother in all family law issues, in actuality fathers have the same constitutional right to be involved in the lives of their children that mothers do.

Attitudes in Western civilization regarding parenting have changed. Active participation for both parents has been shown to be important when raising a child after divorce. Although most states now have gender neutral laws, at times there is still a lingering view that fathers are discriminated against in child custody cases.

As part of the fight to raise awareness regarding fathers' rights and gain equality, the fathers' rights movement maintains some of the following beliefs:
-"Traditional" parenting roles should not automatically disqualify the father from obtaining custody -- either sole or shared -- when it is in the best interests of the child
-Children do better when a father is active in his child's life
-Old presumptions that a child is better off with the mother are inaccurate and biased

Many Ohio family law attorneys report that it is no longer uncommon for custody arrangements to result in shared custody between parents. Lawyers are no longer surprised when a father is given physical custody of his young children.

For example, the Fathers' Rights movement has made it more likely to see the following in court:
-A father preventing a cross-country relocation of the child's mother to keep visitation rights intact
-A father getting a contempt of court order against the mother for child support in arrears
-A father obtaining sole custody of his children
-A father successfully modifying a custody order so his teenager can live with him after the teenager says he or she would rather live with Dad

Decisions involving your family and children are the most significant ones you'll ever make. It is important to have an attorney who truly cares about the needs of your children and their future. If you are a father with questions about family law, custody or child support, contact a local family law attorney for advice on your best options and next steps.
