New York Worker Dies in Ladder Accident
The latest fatal ladder accident highlights the importance of ladder safety precautions.

November 03, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- New York Worker Dies in Ladder Accident

A New York construction worker was killed when he fell from the roof of a six-story church he was helping to restore. The man was an employee of a construction company hired by the church. According to the parish pastor, the man had been working to restore the church for at least two years.

When he fell, the man was standing on a ladder approximately 125 feet off the ground. His fall caused a big enough bang to scare the Rockettes, who had been using the church as a practice space for their upcoming Christmas show.

People at the church reported that the man was installing a safety net at the time he fell. They speculate that he may have lost his footing on the ladder.

There has been no word yet from the man's family regarding a possible wrongful death lawsuit or workers' compensation claim.

Ladder Safety Is Very Important

This accident highlights the importance of always observing ladder safety precautions, especially when working at high altitudes. According to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, falls from portable ladders are one of the most common causes of occupational fatalities and injuries. The agency has recommended safety precautions that workers can use to avoid construction accidents related to portable ladders. For example:
-Always maintain three-point contact (two hands and a foot or two feet and a hand) with the ladder
-Always properly secure ladders that are placed on unstable surfaces or near areas where they could be knocked over
-Never stand on the top rung of a ladder unless it was specifically designed for that purpose
-Always use ladders with skid-resistant rungs and make sure the ladder is clean and dry before using it
-Never use a ladder for any other purpose except that for which it was designed

Workers who fall from a ladder can suffer serious injuries including back and spinal cord injuries, broken bones, lacerations and brain and head injuries. Workers who suffer on-the-job injuries have legal rights, even if they are not legally authorized to work in the United States. If you or a loved one has been injured in a construction accident, contact an experienced personal injury attorney who can help you understand all your options.
